By Lieutenant Kevin Zimmerman
November 26, 2016

On 11-25-16 at 23:14 hours, Company 59 was dispatched to 300 Stoner Drive for a vehicle accident with injuries. As Rescue 59 was preparing to respond, Chief 59-1 went responding and Dauphin County Communications provided updated information of possible entrapment and the vehicle to be on fire. Based on the additional information, an additional rescue was requested, bringing Rescue 49 to the scene. The Rescue crew quickly switched over to Engine 59 and went responding. Chief 59-1, PD and EMS arrived to find the vehicle fully involved with 2 victims who had been rescued by good samaritans who came upon the scene along with a nearby homeowner as well as fire spreading up a hill into a wooded area. Engine 59 arrived, stretched the 150' bumper line and began extinguishing the fire. Rescue 59, upon arrival, set up lighting, assisted Engine 59's crew with fire suppression, and assisted EMS with patient care. Tanker 59 arrived and supplied Engine 59. Rescue 49, upon arrival, was instructed to deploy their hydraulic spreaders to assist with opening up the vehicle to check for additional occupants. No other victims were found. One patient was flow from HIA to Lehigh Burn Center, while the other was transported to Hershey Med then later flown to Lehigh Burn Center. Company 59 remained on the scene until 02:30 to assist the Dauphin County Accident Reconstruction Team with lighting.

The firefighters of the Lower Swatara Fire Department wish to extend our thoughts and prayers to the victims as well as their friends and families. We also wish to thank and commend the good samaritans for stepping up and putting their safety at risk to perform the heroic rescues of these young men. Without their quick actions, the outcome of this incident could have been very different.
